SHIT YOU DON’T WANT TO DO IN SYRACUSE, NY

IMG_7604.JPG

There simply isn’t a proper source of good info on things to do in Syracuse. There are however, plenty of people who “participate” by complaining, comparing and contrasting our city to other cities with the hope someone will come along to do all the work for them. That is a lot of wasted time and energy, in my opinion. Sure there’s a handful of organizations that mean well, but in the end they all work parallel to each other, preventing real advancement.

Truth is there aren’t right or wrong choices when it comes to how we want to spend our time. There’s just what’s right for you, what’s right for me and the possibility of us each experiencing something new.

Here’s the thing: stop doing shit you don’t like. And Stop saying, “There’s nothing do to around here.”

Whenever you hear a local naysayer or curious visitor say that phrase bust out your phone and show them this list...

Salty Enterteasement

IMG_6885.JPG

Salt City Burlesque was the creation of Talia Shenandoah and Christina Suchon (Mary Effen Sunshine.) Talia aka (Harlow Holiday) approached MES in November of 2014 inquiring about her interest in forming a troupe and production in Syracuse.

The idea of the shows were meant to be more theater based and classic or reminiscent of classic burlesque and vaudeville. Contemporary performance art built on a classic structure featuring a mix of drag, dance, stand up comedy, music, flow arts, acrobatic and aerial arts, amongst striptease acts.

We caught up with Harlow Holiday herself to talk about the art of bawdy comedy mixed with playful striptease in their traveling variety shows that promise to titillate. Here’s our...

101 things WE can DO for Syracuse (1-5)

IMG_6872.JPG

Sometimes the smallest things we can do for our neighborhoods can have the biggest impact. The following is a list of things WE can DO for our city complete with local people listed who would be best utilized to take the lead on such projects.

These are merely suggestions of ways that we can make a difference where we live, because that’s what it’s all about at the Republic of Salt. When you glance through these projects/volunteer efforts and someone comes to mind that isn’t listed please SHARE this post with them and encourage them to make it happen.

This young group from Poland led by violinist Stefan Plewniak has a growing discography and an enthusiastic following in Europe, Canada, and the United States. Some people feel the rain, others just get wet.

How to spend a rainy day: Head to the ‘village in the city’ otherwise known as Eastwood to one the most vast collections of stories and memories collected in one place, Books and Melodies 2600 James st. Explore what seems like a never-ending treasure trove of pre-loved vinyl and slightly used novels to stay entertained for hours. The vastness of this dying breed of Americans will have you lost in aisles upon aisles of pages upon pages. Grab a spot by the window to watch the rain romantically fall as you read.

Funk to the Nth power

Tonight 9pm till midnight
Funk N’ Waffles downtown
$15

How to spend your Tuesday…

IMG_6759.JPG

Proving that soul music can be exponentially greater than the sum of its parts, The Nth Power is on a mission to share the light. Formed during an impromptu late-night jam at Jazz Fest 2012 in New Orleans, the relentlessly funky and soulful band believes in music as a higher power tapping into an energy that is simultaneously sexy and spiritual, with songs that will inspire audiences to dance, groove, make love or just stand there with goose bumps.

The quartet hails from diverse musical backgrounds, races and creeds. Female powerhouse Nikki Glaspie was Beyonce’s world-touring drummer for five years before she joined Ivan Nevilles New Orleans funk outfit, Dumpstaphunk. Bassist Nate Edgar of Groovechild and John Browns Body perfectly compliments Singer and Guitarist Nick Cassarino who came from the...
